Description

Qum rugs are among the finest rugs in the world. The quality of Qum silk rugs is particularly high. In the past and at present, Qum is one of the most important centres for producing silk, Kourk wool and silk inlaid carpets. Weavers in Qum use Persian knots and average around 600 knots per square inch. The majority are small, very fine, and beautiful; so many people hang them on the wall. The patterns are usually highly curvilinear, but they sometimes illustrate landscape features or historical stories. Qum is located in central IRAN, about 100 km south of Tehran, near Dasht-e-Kavir, a large salt desert to the east.

Qum rug production is a great success story. The first looms were established in the 1930s at the instigation of a group of Kashan merchants. Qum gained for itself a reputation for high-quality rugs.

Its rugs are not merely copies of those of other centres. This is because of the geniuses of their designers. For the Qum designers have adapted or created designs in a style which are distinctively their own whilst being inspired by designs from other areas.

Despite this, Qum rugs are relatively easy to identify. Colours are varied and often vivid ivory and white being the popular colours for the field. The border is normally composed of three bands, while border Herati are found, the central band often takes its motif from the ground design. The border is normally small in relation to the total area of the rug.

Qum silk rugs represents the pinnacle possible by way of combination of brilliant design, craftsmanship and materials.

Qum silk carpets are amongst the finest of carpets. Knotted entirely of silk results in results in a carpet with great lustre which is highly durable and luxurious. The fine silk thread used makes it possible to produce incredibly detailed patterns.

Weaving began in the religious shrine city of Qum in central Persia in the 1930s. Very finely knotted rugs and carpets in complex Persian medallion, arabesque and palmette styles on light grounds were the favourite approach. Qum rugs are among the finest rugs in the world.
