Chobi was developed in Lahore and Weaving centres were set up in border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan where they were mostly produced for the North American market. Several years ago a company named Rugman invested a significant amount of money to create workshops in the region to weave chobi rugs. To meet the demand, Western carpet importers and department stores worked with Eastern producers to create new, modified oriental styles. One of the most famous designs of that time — the ziegler — has clear echoes in today’s chobi.

Shiraz has been known for centuries as the city of roses, which is reflected in the motifs of many of the carpets. However, the most common motif, and one by which the carpets may be identified, is the diamond-shaped lozenge by itself in the centre of the carpet or repeated along the length twice or three times according to the size.

The diamond motif of the Shiraz carpets is usually in light or dark blue and the background is normally red with decorations of stylised plants and flowers. The border consists of a number of narrow bands framing a wider band, which is often decorated with motifs resembling pine, or palm leaves.

Among the better-known individual tribal carpets are those made by the Qashqai, living in the uplands of the Fars area. In contrast to other Shiraz carpets these are harder wearing, and have a compact pile. Their colours are also deeper and more varied. The warp and weft threads of the Shiraz carpets are either wool or goat’s hair.

An Afghan rug (or Afghan carpet) is a type of handwoven floor-covering textile traditionally made in the northern and western areas of Afghanistan,mainly by Afghan Turkmens and Uzbeks.There are different kinds of Afghan carpets. Especially popular are Khal Mohammadi or Afghan Aqche.
Various vegetable and other natural dyes are used to produce the rich colors. The rugs are mostly of medium sizes. Many patterns and colors are used, but the traditional and most typical is that of the octagonal elephant’s foot (Bukhara) print, often with a red background. The weavers also produce other trappings of the nomadic lifestyle, including tent bags and ceremonial pieces.

Mahal rugs are produced in the town of Mahallat, located in the Arak (Markazi) Province of west central Iran. The rug weaving industry in the region can be traced back for centuries. Due to the location of Mahallat, the area rugs have a Kurdish influence as well as a Turkish influence. The fact that Mahal rugs feature both tribal and curvilinear designs can be directly attributed to the fact that Mahallat is located between the cities of Arak and Delijan. Skilled artisans may use either the Turkish or Persian knot, depending on the particular styles of area rugs that they are weaving.

Hamadan was once the capital of Persia during the periods of the Seljuks and today is the catchment area for rugs from numerous towns and villages, many of which have been weaving rugs for centuries. Because Hamadan rugs are drawn from such a wide area, they can be extremely varied in design. They are hard wearing and generally of good quality.
Fairly recently rugs have been made in the city of Hamadan itself. Such rugs are made with thick high quality wool. Carpets manufactured from the city of Hamadan itself were called Shahr Baff meaning City Knott and are usually of a higher quality than rugs produced by its neighbours.
The Hamadan group includes Lilihan rugs, Mazlaghan rugs and Mushkabad rugs. Apart from the village rugs, Hamadan rugs also encompasses some nomad work that is brought into the city of Hamadan for sale.
Whist the patterns of the Hamadan rugs are highly varying, the colours are dominated by different shades of indigo blue and madder red.
In short, Hamadan carpets are beautiful and durable. The patterns are mostly geometric, but floral motifs occur. They are highly collectable and much loved.

Saveh rugs originate from Saveh, located in northwestern Iran, just south of Tehran and is home to the Shahsavan tribe. Shahsavan literally means “For those who love the Shah” in Farsi and is a title bestowed upon warriors in the 17th century who were defending the northern border of Persia. The majority of Saveh rugs are small pieces and rug runner styles as a result of being woven by nomadic people that used looms that were compact, making them easy to dismantle and transport when relocation became necessary. Early Saveh rugs are geometric, with tribal designs in either an allover or medallion style. The allover patterns have tribal design elements such as flower heads, Hook and S motifs, animals, and birds. The medallion style has one, two, or three pendant-shaped medallions mostly in an Open Field background. The borders generally have an alternating large leaf with flower head motif.Saveh field and border colorations are mostly reds, dark blue, browns, and ivory. In addition, different shades of blue, green, gray, and gold are used for the medallion, design elements, and outlines.Saveh rugs are known in the antique market from the late nineteenth century.

Najafabad rugs originate from Najafabad, located in central Iran near the city of Isfahan. As well as being a well known and respected center for area rug weaving, Najafabad is also the trade center for an agricultural region noted for its pomegranates. Najafabad rugs woven are not distinctive to the city, but rather to the region. The style follows most closely the designs and colors of its neighbors in Isfahan and Kashan and to a lesser degree Yadz and Ardekan. Although not the equal of the legendary Isfahan area rug, Najafabad rugs are of extremely good quality and have great symmetry to them. Local artisans use Persian knots which offer greater precision.

Meymeh rugs are authentic hand-woven Persian rugs, made in the district of Meymeh, which is near Isfahan in central Iran. The designs are similar to Qashqai or other tribal rugs. They usually have a main diamond medallion, embedded within another medallion, embedded within another one and so on for few times. The main color is usually a rich burgundy accented with many blues, green and ivories. The quality is perhaps one of the highest among the tribal family of rugs. It is very densely knotted and will last a long time. An authentic Meymeh Persian rug is an intelligent way to greatly enhance the decor of any room.
