Village rugs are produced by weavers that are settled in one location. They are different from tribal rugs that are produced by nomadic tribes that moved from one location to another. City rugs are produced on order in structured settings in bigger towns. Each type of rug has their own unique characteristics.
Village rugs are higher in quality than tribal pieces. Village rugs are in high demand because of their versatile colors and designs, higher quality and durability, and great value for money.

Hamadan was once the capital of Persia during the periods of the Seljuks and today is the catchment area for rugs from numerous towns and villages, many of which have been weaving rugs for centuries. Because Hamadan rugs are drawn from such a wide area, they can be extremely varied in design. They are hard wearing and generally of good quality.
Fairly recently rugs have been made in the city of Hamadan itself. Such rugs are made with thick high quality wool. Carpets manufactured from the city of Hamadan itself were called Shahr Baff meaning City Knott and are usually of a higher quality than rugs produced by its neighbours.
The Hamadan group includes Lilihan rugs, Mazlaghan rugs and Mushkabad rugs. Apart from the village rugs, Hamadan rugs also encompasses some nomad work that is brought into the city of Hamadan for sale.
Whist the patterns of the Hamadan rugs are highly varying, the colours are dominated by different shades of indigo blue and madder red.
In short, Hamadan carpets are beautiful and durable. The patterns are mostly geometric, but floral motifs occur. They are highly collectable and much loved.

The Afhar are tent-dwellers. Their primary occupation is sheep husbandry and handicraft such as many ornamental weavings: saddlebags, salt bags and flat-weaves known in the West as kilims. They are however best known for their superb carpets in an array of eclectic designs. Afshar means “obedient”.
Since the Safavid period, the tribal group Afshar migrated from their origins in Central Asia to settle in Iranian Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan republic, and Eastern Turkey. This background has led to the inclusion of regional influences on Afshar weaving, resulting in a distinctive aesthetic that incorporates elements of several village and nomadic Persian rug styles, as well as Southern Persian design influences.
The Afshar carpets usually have red and blue colour tones and mostly geometrical patterns. The most common pattern contains a large center piece with one or more squared medallions, some say that this symbolizes a hide stretched for preparation. Caucasian rug influences are also strongly felt resulting in displays of bold geometric designs in primary colours.
Perhaps not the largest but certainly better known and more prolific concentration of the Afshar clans is in the Kerman province, Baft being their central marketplace.
Their best-known carpets in fact are made by and tribeswomen in southern Iran’s Kerman and Hormozgan provinces.
Afshar carpets are valued world-wide as quality tribal rugs and are highly sought after.

Tabas rugs are knotted in central Iran. Tabas is located about six hundred kilometers south of Mashad. The city of Kashmar is to the north and the cities of Birjand and Ferdows to the east. The pattern consists of medallions with loops and arabesques in bright colors. They are like Nain rugs but more rustic.
Ivory and light blue are the most common colours used in Tabass rugs and carpets. There are some newer Tabass rugs and carpets with either red, dark blue or even green backgrounds. Soft wool is used for the pile and is of a loose pile. Warps are mostly cotton; wefts can be either cotton or wool.

An Afghan rug (or Afghan carpet) is a type of handwoven floor-covering textile traditionally made in the northern and western areas of Afghanistan, mainly by Afghan Turkmens and Uzbeks. There are different kinds of Afghan carpets. Especially popular are Khal Mohammadi or Afghan Aqche.
Various vegetable and other natural dyes are used to produce the rich colors. The rugs are mostly of medium sizes. Many patterns and colors are used, but the traditional and most typical is that of the octagonal elephant’s foot (Bukhara) print, often with a red background. The weavers also produce other trappings of the nomadic lifestyle, including tent bags and ceremonial pieces.
