Tabriz is situated in north-western Iran, in the province of Azerbaijan, and is the capital of a very important carpet weaving region. The Tabriz carpets are of very good quality, finely knotted and made of strong lustrous wool. The higher knot count examples of Tabriz rugs are often woven on silk warp and weft base. There are a number of styles of rug produced in the Tabriz region including Tree of Life, Hunting scenes, Pictorial rugs, traditional Medallion rugs, all over repeating pattern rugs and Mahi/Herati rugs.
The manufacturing of carpets today is extensive and the quality varies from excellent handicrafts to simple and cheap bazaar qualities. A good Tabriz has a short and rough pile. The patterns can consist of a centrally placed medallion surrounded by arabesques, weeping willows and cypresses. Another popular motif is the Four Seasons which describes the life of the Persian farmer during spring, summer, autumn and winter.
