Description

This carpet is of the finest quality and is a Quchan Carpet, coming from the Quchan County in Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran.  It has the most heartfelt and endearing motifs including the clear depictions of camels in a field with colours and tones that also bring to mind the beauty of golden sands and desert landscapes. Without a closer examination this carpet may be thought to carry a message of austerity, whereas a closer consideration of its motifs and the ancient poetic script will show the exact opposite is the case.

First, we must start with the symbols and the motifs that appear on the carpet. Symbolism in Persian rugs is passed down from generation to generation, and these designs can be considered trademarks. They include dense all over patterns, also at times rich striking colours and scenes from daily life.

The symbolism in this rug is profound. Symbols were often believed to protect the owner from misfortunes or to bring to the mind of the owner images that would bring happiness or good fortune to him or her, or perhaps even to the whole village community. Sometimes such images may represent historical monuments, scenes from daily life, or as in this case animals such as camels. More often than not such imagery would appear in a wider context of religious imagery such as the tree of life or the garden of paradise.

The camel pattern used here is often used as a motif to augur wealth and happiness, and this together with the amazing tones of colour make this a most auspicious carpet. Having said that, we must also consider the poetry of the inscription which is profound and provides the rug with a truly wonderful other layer of meaning. The inscription is in an ancient form of writing, the precise meaning is difficult to translate except in general terms. It may be translated to mean “After we endure, we shall be blessed with happiness, unity and loyalty”. So whilst this rug is not flowery spring like in symbolism and the setting may be a desert, there is the presence of camels (meaning wealth – perhaps oil wells would be more immediately understood today as carrying this meaning) and the inscription which promises at the end of endurance more soulful and spiritual rewards such as unity and loyalty. You can buy this carpet with complete confidence and our complete assurance of its quality.
