What is most striking about this rug at first balance is its beauty and symmetry focusing as it does on a central medallion and the abundance of floral motifs that cover the field. The colours are in soft muted tones. The field is a Shah Abas design. There are curvilinear spandrels to each of the top corners of the field and these contain the most beautiful spread of vine and flowers. The bottom of the field does not have spandrels but each side have clear and striking motifs of flowers in vases (one to each side). The over image is very much one of almost a Milhrad that is a gateway to heaven or paradise if you like. So this carpet whilst containing rich and strong images of earthly beauty such as vines and flowers, the essence of its shape is to invite the viewer to consider such beauty in the light of eternity and paradise.
